Abstract

Abstract

The aims of this research were to study KMUTT studentsû self-awareness of AIDS and their AIDS-riskbehaviors, the relationship between their self-awareness of AIDS and AIDS-risk behaviors, and guidelines forenhancing their self-awareness of the danger of AIDS. This research employed both the quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. The sample for the quantitative study consisted of 383 KMUTT students.A structured questionnaire was employed as the data collecting instrument. Data were analyzed using basicstatistics and Pearson correlation coefficient. As for the qualitative study, in-depth interviews and focus groupdiscussion were employed to obtain field data from three groups of KMUTT students, each of which consistedof 10 students, who formed into the groups to organize anti-AIDS activities for youths and who had experienceconcerning AIDS-risk behaviors. The data were analyzed and synthesized by content analysis and inductiveconclusion. The research findings from both the quantitative and qualitative studies were as follows:

The level of KMUTT studentsû self-awareness of AIDS was rather high (~ = 3.55). The studentsalready knew about the danger of AIDS, but they did not realize that it was close to their daily lives. As forthe social dimension, the level of studentsû AIDS-risk behaviors was moderate (~ = 2.40), which related totheir values and risky sexual behaviors. As for the family and psycho-social dimensions, the level of studentsûAIDS-risk behaviors was low (~ = 1.90, and 1.76 respectively). The correlation between the social dimensionof AIDS-risk behavior and the self-awareness of AIDS was negative and significant at the .001 level, withr = ›.167. As for guidelines for enhancing KMUTT studentsû self-awareness of the danger of AIDS, theproactive strategy should be emphasized which was an implementation of social projects with anti AIDSactivities for the first year students.
