Abstract

Abstract

The objectives of this research were (1) to study life quality of private industrial enterprise employees in Nonthaburi province; (2) to compare the levels of life quality of private industrial enterprise employeesclassified by personal factors, personal life factors, and life in workplace factors; and (3) to study the factorsaffecting life quality of private industrial enterprise employees. The sample of this research comprised 2 groups.The first group consisted of 15 executives, employees, academics, and human resource lawyers. The secondgroup consisted of 396 employees working in private industrial enterprises in Group G which comprisedwholesale business, retail business, car and motorcycle repair business, personal and household effects businessin Nonthaburi province. The employed research instrument was an in-depth interview form on factors affectinglife quality of private industrial enterprise employees, with the Cronbachûs alpha reliability of .952. Statisticsemployed for analysis of quantitative data were the percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA,Scheffflûs method of pair-wise comparison, and multiple regression analysis; while data from in-depth interviewswere analyzed with content analysis.

The research findings were as follows;

1. For personal factors, the majority of private industrial enterprise employees in Nonthaburi provincein the sample were females (63.89 percent), aged not over 30 years (62.63 percent), with single status (58.08percent), with the number of family members (including the respondent) between 3 - 4 persons (48.99 percent),with bachelorûs degree or higher educational level (38.13 percent), with current monthly income of7,001 - 10,000 baht (30.05 percent), and with 1 - 3 years of work experience in the enterprise (30.56 percent).

2. The overall rating of personal life factors of the employees in the sample was at the high level,with the highest rating mean being that of the virtues and ethical factor, followed by the warm family lifefactor; while the factor receiving the lowest rating mean was that of physical well being. The overall rating forlife in workplace factors was at the high level. When considered by aspects, it was found that the top threeaspects were rated at the high level, with the aspect receiving the top rating mean being that of the relationshipwith and acceptance from their colleagues, followed by that of career advancement and job security, and that ofwork environment and job safety, respectively; while the aspect receiving the lowest rating mean was that ofremuneration and fringe benefits which was at the moderate level.

3. The overall rating of life quality of employees was at the high level. When considered by aspects,the aspect ratings were also at the high level, with the top rating being that of the mental happiness, followedby that of the physical happiness.

4. Employees in the sample with different personal factors of gender, age, marital status, familymembers, and work experience did not significantly differ in their levels of life quality; while those withdifferent educational levels, monthly incomes, personal life factors, and life in workplace factors differedsignificantly in their levels of life quality at the .001 level.

5. Factors affecting life quality of private industrial enterprise employees were personal life factors, lifein workplace factors, educational level, and age, with the combined predicting power of 59 percent. Theregression equation was as follows:

Life quality of private industrial enterprise employees = 0.894 + 0.513 (personal life factors) + 0.255(life in workplace factors) + 0.042 (educational level) › 0.049 (age)

6. From in-depth interviews with the executives, employees, academics, and lawyers regarding life qualityof private industrial enterprise employees in the components of personal life factors, life in workplace factors,physical happiness, and mental happiness, the findings were as follows:

Concerning their personal life factors, the majority of employees in the sample had warm family lifewithout any conflict problems or quarrels. Most of them has good morality, were optimistic in their viewstoward life, and made use of religious teachings in living their lives.

Concerning their life in workplace factors, entrepreneurs should study the international standards onwork safety to ensure that employees have better work environment and work safety. As for careeradvancement and job security, it was found that small sized enterprises could offer less job security than thatoffered in larger enterprises. As for remuneration and fringe benefits, the enterprises with rather small sizescould not offer as much remuneration and fringe benefits as those offered by larger enterprises which were atthe rather good level.

Concerning physical happiness, employees in the sample were able to acquire commodities necessaryfor adequate living for themselves and their family including appropriate places for living.

Concerning mental happiness, employees in the sample were satisfied with their living conditions andtheir workplace conditions. When their life quality was compared with that of employees in other enterprises ofcomparable sizes, no difference was found. Many enterprises tried to create the balance between personal lifeand life in workplace for their employees.
