The Effects of Group Discussion Techniques on Graduate Students’ Administrative Problem Analysis Ability
Keywords:

This study aimed to examine the effects of group discussion techniques on students’ ability to analyze administrative problems, as well as to explore their patterns of participation in discussion activities and their level of satisfaction with the learning process. The participants were 93 students enrolled in PAD 631 Seminar on Contemporary Issues in Administration, Semester 3/2024. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. The research instruments included pretest and posttest assessments, a discussion behavior assessment form, and a satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and a paired samples t-test.
The findings revealed that the mean pretest score was 5.05 (S.D. = 2.49), which increased to 7.52 (S.D. = 1.31) in the posttest. The paired t-test indicated that this difference was statistically significant (t(92) = 8.779, p < .001), indicating an improvement in students’ problem analysis ability following the group discussion activities. In terms of participation, most students demonstrated a high level of engagement (65.59%), followed by a moderate level (30.11%), and a low level (4.30%). Overall student satisfaction was at a high level, particularly regarding feelings and motivation, the learning process, and course content, while perceived benefits were at a moderate level. In conclusion, group discussion serves as a beneficial instructional approach for supporting students’ analytical skills, active participation, and learning satisfaction, aligning well with learner-centered education principles.
