Democracy and Government Spending: Case of Thailand

Abstract

This research seeks to pursue whether or not level of democracy lead to high government spending in Thailand. The statistics used in this study are derived from National Statistics Bureau of Thailand and the Budget Bureau of Thailand between 1980-2016. To achieve the objectives, the descriptive statistics is provided and followed by the regression analysis. The results drawn from this study suggest that democracy correlates with government spending. In other words, as a nation’s democracy level increases, the government spending tends to increase as well. Similarly, GDP and level of tax collection is shown to have a positive impact on the government spending.
