บทคัดย่อ
บทความนี้ศึกษาถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประชาธิปไตยกับความรุนแรงที่มีพัฒนาการตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน ฐานที่สำคัญในการวิเคราะห์เริ่มจากคุณค่าที่ได้จากนครรัฐเอเธนส์ที่ถูกมองว่าเป็นต้นกำเนิดของประชาธิปไตย หลังจากนั้นประชาธิปไตยถูกมองในหลากหลายมิติ เช่น ประชาธิปไตยอยู่ตรงข้ามกับความรุนแรง รัฐประชาธิปไตยถูกมองว่ามีความชอบธรรมในการใช้ความรุนแรง ความไม่รุนแรงเป็นทางเลือกที่มนุษย์ในสังคมประชาธิปไตยควรใช้ จุดกำเนิดและหัวใจสำคัญของประชาธิปไตยคือความรุนแรง และ ประชาธิปไตยมีความรุนแรงในตัวของมันเอง เป็นต้น โดยในประเด็นสุดท้ายนี้ถูกให้ความสำคัญว่าเป็นพัฒนาการของการใช้ความรุนแรงแบบใหม่ที่เกิดขึ้นบนโลกมนุษย์ โดยมีเหตุการณ์ 9/11 ที่เกิดขึ้นในสหรัฐอเมริกาเป็นสิ่งยืนยันว่าประชาธิปไตยมีความรุนแรงในตัวของมันเอง
