Abstract
The Forming Process of the Leaders toward Community Development : A Case Study of Kondeesrisungkom Prizemen in Changwat Songkhla
The objectives of this study were to investigate factors and the emergence process of leaders, the characteristics and roles of seven exemplary persons: Mr.Phrim Nantharat, Mr.Chop Yodkaew, Mr.Lap Nupradit, Mr.Amphon Duangpan, Mr.Khlao Kaewphet, phra Athikan Thong Techapunyo and Mr.Ron Madit, and relationship of group/organization leaders with their community in order to form guidelines for promoting emergence of leaders who could strengthen the community and to increase the number of such leaders to support community potential.
This quality research is a documentary study and interviews were conducted with specific social award-winning leaders.
Objective 1:
The result revealed that the leader development process consisted of four steps.
Step 1: Identifying the problems that the community leader faced. His family and his relatives faced the problem of poverty, a lack of funds and being exploited by the middle man on selling crops. This affected the leader himself and his relatives in the community.
Step 2: The leader tried to solve the community problems using solutions that were appropriated for the context and peopleus way of life. Throughout the time that he worked, the leader had to face problems and obstacles that he had to solve all the time. As a result, the learning process took place.
Step 3: The leader implemented the methods he had studied to solve the community problems so successful that people in the community could help and rely on each other which reduced dependence on sources outside the community.
Step 4: The leader received support from government agencies in publicizing his ideas and experience to interested people in other communities.
Objective 2:
The common outstanding natural characteristics of all seven leaders were: honest, confident in their ideas and actions, sacrificing, patient and creative.
Objective 3:
The roles played by the leader were leading in terms of ideas, persuading people to participate in community development and acting as a manager. The leaders could be classified into two categories according to their work: those leaders who initiated savings groups in the community and those who developed body of knowledge in agriculture.
