Abstract

This qualitative research aims to investigate factors influencing in the selection of seafood logistics service providers and propose a conceptual model for understanding in selecting logistics service providers of seafood entrepreneurs. The research collected data from 16 managers (key informants) working in seafood companies in Ranong, Surat Thani and Chumphon provinces. Research participants are recruited by a purposive sampling method. Regarding data collection methods, this research collect data using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Consequently, the interview data collected from fieldwork were analyzed using the Template Analysis method. The research results show that 12 key factors are important in selecting a Logistics Service Provider, and they can be classified into 3 categories. They are, logistics service provider characteristics, operation costs, and operational performance. Logistics service provider characteristics and operation costs are the two factors influencing on the stage of preliminary selection of potential logistics service providers. Moreover, the research results indicate that direct experience in seafood transport of logistics service providers is also considered as an important factor. In terms of operation costs, seafood entrepreneurs prefer the logistics service providers who offer reasonable prices. The quality of products and services must meet the specified standard criteria before being selected. The final factor, namely operational performance, determines the level of business relationship between the two parties and how it will continue. Eventually, the developed conceptual model of the selection of logistics service providers demonstrates clear linkages and relationships among factors of logistics service provider characteristics, operation costs, and operational performance. This model can assist seafood entrepreneurs in gaining a clearer understanding and make better decisions in selecting logistics service providers.
