Development of Doctoral Curriculum in Information Studies

This qualitative research aims at developing doctoral program in Information Studies based on graduate educational standard, national education development, university philosophy and international academic and professional standards. The study starts with an analysis of both Thai and international universitycurriculum documents, followed by brain storming of experts and curriculum drafting committee.
The research fndings lead to the drafting of the doctoral program ofInformation Studies focusing on local intellectual and cultural heritage to produce highly capable information professionals and researchers. The drafted program aims to produce graduates who 1) demonstrate advanced research skills and are able to integrate information management knowledge, knowledge management, and information technology for knowledge management and construction of new knowledge in response to the national manpower needs, 2) possess knowledge, analyzing and synthesizing skills, capabilities in conducting research for problem solving, and development of new knowledge in information science and related subject areas based on the Thai and international political, economical and social conditions, and 3) have moral and ethical conduct, including a sense of social responsibilities in promoting learning society. The drafted program comprises 3 courses: an advanced research methodology in information studies, top-level management theories, and local intellectuals. Two non-credit courses are also required: academic writing and seminars on dissertation topic selection and dissertation proposal development. In addition, 5 elective courses are included: information resources and services, information technology, information policies and social contexts, database organization system and advanced information technology, and digital information management.
