Effects of English Captioned Videos and Non-Captioned Videos on Grade 5 Learners’ Listening Ability

Abstract
The purposes of this study were twofold 1) to compare the effect of using captioned videos and non - captioned videos on Grade 5 learners’ listening ability, and 2) to investigate factors affecting the participants’ listening ability through the use of two types of videos. The participants were purposively selected. Two experimental groups were captioned video condition (n = 25) and non - captioned video condition (n = 21). The experiment took 30 hours over the period of 4 months. Two data collection instruments used in this study were 1) a 30 item pre - post and retention tests (α = .53) and 2) semi - structured interview questions.
The three finding were 1) significant differences of post - test and retention test within the two groups were found (F = 12.816**, P < 0.01, ε2 = 0.226) suggesting that the effect was due to the practice effect of the three tests, 2) factors positively affecting their listening ability were the characteristics of the videos were reported as suitable for their age, being cartoon characters, sound, content and video length, and 3) The problems found in this study were that the speed of some conversation in the videos was too fast and the learners found the accent unfamiliar.
