Accessibility Promotion Strategy to rights of LGBTQ People in Thailand

Abstract

          This research aims to present the situation, problems, needs, and approaches to accessing human rights, and to create and present strategies to access the rights of LGBTQ people in Thailand using mixed methods research. The quantitative research was conducted using online questionnaires with 437 respondents of LGBTQ people in the central, northern, southern, and northeastern regions of Thailand. Qualitative research was conducted through interviews and focus groups with 10 representatives from organizations involved in promoting human rights.        

          The results of the study revealed that problems and needs for accessing the rights of LGBT persons include: 1) ignorance of individual and others' human rights. 2) Lack of equal legal protection from changing gender. 3) Marriage and starting a family. 4) Ownership of property of individual and partner. 5) Discrimination due to gender identity. The approach to access rights is achieved through the use of media, creating equality, non-discrimination, and resolving issues and limitations of laws that do not allow LGBTQ people to access their rights.

           Strategies to promote access to the rights of LGBTQ people in Thailand can be done through the following proposals: 1) development of systems, knowledge promotion mechanisms, approaches to access the human rights of LGBTQ people, and expand cooperation with network partners through social media.
2) Prevention and monitoring of human rights issues of LGBTQ persons.
3) Protection and assistance of LGBTQ victims from the inaccessibility of their rights. 4) Implementing legislative mechanisms that cover LGBTQ individuals without their traditional gender. 5) Development and management of information to enable everyone to access their human rights.
