Language Features and Contents of Available Online Birthday Quotes on Facebook

Abstract

This paper aimed at studying the language features and contents in birthday greetings on Facebook. The data were 96 greetings. Both verbal and visual resources were found in the birthday greetings.  First, the verbal resources consisted of the use of poetry, the use of prose, and English language mixing. Second, the visual resources consisted of various illustrations such as cake, gift box, money, heart, cartoon, etc. for enhancing the meanings of the verbal resources. For contents, there were ten topics found: happiness, fulfillment, wealth, health and longevity, healthy mind, fame, luck, occupation, love, and good appearance. Language
