Strategies for Translating Nominalization Indicators from Thai to Chinese: A Case Study of “Behind the Painting”

Abstract
This research article studies the translation method of the noun phrase indicator การ ความ การที่ from Thai into Chinese by studying from the novel Behind the Picture by Sri Burapha and the Chinese translation version by Luan and Xing. The result shows that the translation of the indicator การ and ความ from Thai to Chinese employs 9 strategies which are 1) literal translation, 2) addition, 3) elimination, 4) substituting different words without changing the original meaning, 5) translating into verb phrases, 6) verb-object structure, 7) subject-predicate structures, 8) dividing and restructuring, and 9) semantic translation. The most commonly strategies employed by the translators are literal translation, followed by semantic translation, while only 7 strategies are used to translate noun phrase indicator การที่ from Thai to Chinese, no literal translation and substituting different words without changing the original meaning strategies were found. The translators choose to utilize the semantic translation as the most common tool, followed by the subject-predicate structure. Each translation strategy of the nominalization indicator has its own distinctive features, for example, literal translation is often used to translate nominalization that function as subjects or objects; the verb-object translation is often used for nominalization with การ/ความ/การที่ + verb + object structures; the subject-predicate translation is used for nominalization with การที่ + subject + predicate structures and complex nominalizations, etc.
