Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study and analyze various organs used in Korean nonverbal expressions; and analyze Thai students' interpretations of Korean nonverbal expressions. A total of 160 poses of nonverbal Korean language appeared in various media such as Korean literature and Korean drama was collected. These poses were expressed through breasts, ears, eyes, legs, heads, necks, feet, stomachs, cheeks, hands, fingers, shoulders, faces, mouths, noses, chins, waists, and tongues. Also, the most expressive organs were the hands and fingers with 55 poses, followed by the heads and mouths with 14 poses. According to Thai Students’ Nonverbal Korean Interpretation, it was found that they could correctly interpret some Korean nonverbal gestures and be able to communicate effectively with Koreans such as expressing love by using hands to form a heart. On the other hand, there was any misinterpretations. For instance, using the index finger to rotate the temple, Thai students interpreted it as having a headache, not interpreting it as being out of consciousness. This could be due to not comprehending the meanings and differences in matters of culture. Therefore, studying Korean nonverbal language can assist in effective communication.
