Education for the Production of Docile Subjecthood: Implications of Civic Education Subject in Thai Schools
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article applies the concepts of ‘traditional education’ from John Dewey and ‘banking education’ from Paolo Freire to study the content of the subject Civic Education based on the 2008 national core curriculum for the subjects of social studies, religion and culture, taught in Thai schools at both the primary and secondary level. The main argument is that the content of the civic education subject has actively “ordered and imposed” and “desired” the Thai citizen to be equal only as a docile subject under the democratic regime of the government with the King as Head of State. As a result, these processes undermined the formation of an ideal citizen and democratization in Thai society. The research uses sources such as teachers’ manuals, textbooks, lesson plans, exercise papers, exercises found in school books, examination questions, teaching activities and instruction media.
