Potential and Participation of People in the Community towards the Development of Ban Sandap Tourism, Phanthai Norasing Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep, Thailand

Abstract

This research aims to 1) analyze the potential of Ban Sandap community tourism and 2) examine the participation and contribution of local people in the development of Ban Sandap community-based tourism, Phanthai Norasing Subdistrict, Muang District, Samut Sakhon Province. This research is quantitative, employing the questionnaire survey for conducting data from research samples comprising community leaders, local people, entrepreneurs, and personnel in the Phanthai Norasing Subdistrict Administration Organization, Mueang Samut Sakhon District, Samut Sakhon Province. Data were collected from the questionnaire with nonprobability sampling, selecting quota sampling for 50 males and 50 females for 100 samples, and then randomly selected. Data derived were analyzed with descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and presented in a descriptive format.
The study results showed that the tourism potential of Ban Sandap community was very high ( ̅x = 3.71, S.D. = 0.73) in most aspects regarding the assessment of the tourism component (5As), except for accessibility of communities where the results were moderate. The condition of roads and public buses serving tourists needs to be improved. Research findings also revealed that people in the community participated and contributed significantly to tourism development. Still, it is in a realm that is not high level ( ̅x = 3.53, S.D. = 0.73). People in the community are most involved in receiving and sharing benefits; however, participation in planning, decision-making, operations, monitoring, and evaluation was moderate.
