Democratization in Portugal and Spain : the Beginning of the Third Wave
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study explains the phenomena in democratization processes in Portugal and Spain which are neighbouring countries in Southern Europe and in 1970’s of the same period with different styles of government. It is based on the approach of making democratic consolidation in Zagorski (1992, p.5, pp.51-54) which emphasizes on the establishing civilian control of the armed forces. It suggests that the success of democratization cannot be occurred without the roles of military in case of Portugal and without the roles of “tripartite” the King-political leader-military in case of Spain in getting the military out of politics and establishing the civilian control.
