Abstract

The aims of this research article are: (1) to identify influences of demographic factors on participation in social associations or organizations of the Thai people; (2) to analyze relationship between participation in social associations or organizations and political participation among Thai citizens after controlling for demographic characteristics; and (3) to propose some policy recommendations aimed at fostering participation in social associations or organizations in order to develop democracy in Thailand. Using the Asian Barometer survey data in 2010 and statistics analysis as a main data and technique, it was found that age, education attainment, family income, and domicile statistically associated with engagement in social associations (p<.001). In addition, after controlling for demographic characteristics, participation in social associations did have influence on political participation (p<.001). The results revealed that those living in rural area, and having low income and low level of education tend to participate more in social associations. The results also indicated a democratic development problem in the country, as those who did not participate much in politics were likely to be the haves. To remedy the situation, the Thai government should initiate social engagement projects among people in urban area and empower the existing social associations.
