Special language features of German scientific language include referencing conventions. Understanding and applying these conventions is an important goal in German Studies. This paper gives an overview of different forms German referencing in order to develop a framework for the acquisition of these forms. The framework is then used to explore the acquisition process of a Vietnamese student at Hanoi University. The results of this study provide insight into this process, and form an empirical basis for improving the teaching of scientific writing in colleges and universities.
