The Effects of a Group Counselling Program Based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy on Reducing Academic Burnout among Grade 11 Students in a High School in Bangkok, Thailand
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental study aimed to (1) examine the level of academic burnout among Mathayom Suksa 5 (Grade 11) students, (2) compare academic burnout scores of the experimental group before and after the intervention, including the follow-up period, and (3) compare the scores between the experimental and control groups. The sample was purposively selected from Mathayom Suksa 5 (Grade 11) students at a high school in Bangkok, Thailand, comprising 10 students who scored above the 25th percentile on an academic burnout inventory and voluntarily agreed to participate in the program with parental consent. They were assigned to an experimental group (n = 5) and a control group (n = 5). The experimental group participated in a group counseling program based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), consisting of 10 sessions, each lasting 90 minutes over a period of five weeks. Research instruments included a CBT-based group counseling program and an academic burnout inventory adapted by the researcher from the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (MBI–SS) (Maslach et al., 1996). The instrument consisted of 29 items (adapted from the original 21-item version), including a personal information section, and demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .91). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests, including the Friedman test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann–Whitney U test. The results indicated that participants showed moderate to high levels of academic burnout, and the experimental group's burnout scores were significantly lower after the intervention and at the follow-up assessment than before the intervention (p = .043), with no significant difference between the post-test and follow-up scores. In addition, although the experimental group tended to report lower academic burnout scores than the control group, the between-group difference did not reach statistical significance. The findings suggest that the CBT-based group counseling program may help reduce academic burnout and maintain its effects during the follow-up period. Further research with larger and more diverse samples is recommended to confirm the effectiveness of the program.
