Competency of Teaching Vipassana Meditation of Overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus in Buddhist Propagation

Abstract

This research aims to: 1) study the current conditions, problems, and developmental needs regarding the competency in teaching Vipassana meditation of Overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus; 2) study the components for developing teaching competency in Vipassana meditation according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipatthana) of Overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus; 3) study the proposed processes for developing teaching competency in Vipassana meditation according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness of Overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus. This is qualitative research conducted at Wat Mahathat Yuwarachrangsarit in Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok. The population/sample consisted of 50 monks/individuals. Data collection tools included interviews and focus group discussions. Data analysis employed descriptive content analysis, descriptive writing, and descriptive presentation. Data analysis was conducted through content analysis, considering main issues and dividing them into sub-issues.

The study findings revealed: 1) Current conditions and obstacles in propagating Buddhism among Overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus include Dhammaduta Bhikkhus' lack of understanding of the language, culture, customs, and traditions of respective countries, and insufficient development of competency in teaching Vipassana meditation. 2) Components for developing teaching competency in Vipassana meditation according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness of Overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus require Dhammaduta Bhikkhus to study and understand the methods of practicing Vipassana meditation according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, comprising: (1) Kayanupassana Satipatthana - developing abilities in teaching body observation, using postures and gestures in communication; (2) Vedananupassana Satipatthana - developing skills in managing emotions of both oneself and students; (3) Cittanupassana Satipatthana - ability to teach the development of concentration and wisdom; (4) Dhammanupassana Satipatthana - systematic transmission of Dhamma teachings, connecting Dhamma with daily life. 3) The study of proposed processes for developing teaching competency in Vipassana meditation according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness of Overseas Dhammaduta Bhikkhus indicates a development process comprising: (1) Knowledge development - deep understanding of principles and methods of Vipassana practice; (2) Skills development - continuous personal practice of Vipassana to develop communication skills; (3) Attitude development - fostering loving-kindness and patience to develop mindfulness and wisdom, building confidence in teaching, and enhancing flexibility in Buddhist principles, which will enable teachers to explain and answer questions correctly and clearly.
