Model for good social interaction based on Buddhism

Abstract

          This Research study aims to analyze social interaction theories and Buddhist principles to develop a model for fostering positive social engagement. Utilizing a qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 20 purposively selected experts, including Buddhist scholars and social scientists. The findings are categorized into three key areas. Theoretical Framework: Social interaction is defined as a dynamic process of communication and engagement. It is underpinned by various sociological perspectives, including Social Exchange, Role Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Structural Functionalism, and Conflict Theory.


          Buddhist Integration: Key Dhamma principles identified for enhancing social bonds include the Six Directions, the Four Sublime States of Mind (Brahmavihara), the Four Bases of Social Unity (Sangahavatthu), the Five Precepts, the Four Virtues for Laypeople and the Six Virtues for Fraternal Living (Saraniyadhamma). The HARMO Model  The research culminates in a new conceptual framework for Buddhist social interaction consisting of Harmony Fostering concord and collective unity. Altruism  Prioritizing the well-being and benefit of others. Respect  Showing honor and cknowledging mutual value. Make Friends Actively establishing and sustaining friendships. Own Conduct Maintaining ethical discipline and proper self-behavior.
