A Comparative Study of Factors Influencing Students’ Academic Achievement in Mathematics at Buriram Rajabhat University

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate factors influencing the academic achievement among mathematics students in the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science at Buriram Rajabhat University. The research samples consisted of 156 mathematics students from the 2nd to 5th year in the Faculty of Education and 103 mathematics students from the 2nd to 4th year in the Faculty of Science, enrolling during the first semester of the academic year 2020. Data were collected through the administration of questionnaires and subsequently analyzed using both multiple regression analysis and the artificial neural network method.

The results revealed that the artificial neural network method demonstrated that the root mean square error (RMSE) was less than the multiple regression analysis method, in which the artificial neural network method obtained the average of the root mean square error (RMSE) of the mathematics program of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Science were 0.282 and 0.398, respectively.

Moreover, eight factors were identified as influential in determining the academic achievement of mathematics students in the Faculty of Education, namely: gender (), parental status (),part-time employment (),place of residence (), the size of the secondary school from which they graduated (), average high school performance (), learning behavior (), and learning environment ().
