Abstract

L1 and Foreign Language Learning

Apart from learners' target language system, learner, teacher and other related learning context, it@s widely accepted that learners' first language is another factor playing an important role in the foreign language learning process. Its effect is greater when the first language system is much different from the second language system, as, for example, in Thai and French languages, or when learners have a few opportunities to use target language with native speakers or in daily life. The first language brings about learners' interlanguage -- a linguistic system developed by a foreign language learner who has not yet become fully proficient -- while they are learning or communicating with the target language, either in speaking or in writing. This system is approximating the target language: some features of the first language are preserved while others have some characteristics of target language rules.

This article deals with interlanguage theories and principles, providing examples of different types of interlanguage constructed by Thai learners of French as a foreign language. These examples were collected from direct/classroom experiences and reviewed from related articles and studies. They include interlanguage phonetics, interlanguage lexicon, interlanguage syntax, interlanguage grammar and interlanguage discourse and pragmatics. Issues regarding advantages and disadvantages of interlanguage in foreign language learning are also presented.
