บูรพาคดีในภูมิภาคมลายู : ศึกษาพัฒนาการบูรพาคดีอังกฤษ ในคาบสมุทรมลายู ค.ศ.1786-1957

      งานวิจัยเรื่อง “พัฒนาการบูรพาคดีนิยมในคาบสมุทรมลายู ค.ศ.1786-1957” มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาพัฒนาการบูรพาคดีนิยมอังกฤษในคาบสมุทรมลายูภายใต้อาณานิคมอังกฤษ 2) ศึกษากรอบการศึกษาของนักบูรพาคดีที่ศึกษาแหลมมลายูและผลกระทบต่ออค์ความรู้ การศึกษาเรื่องนี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้องกับบูรพาคดี มีผลการวิจัยสามารถสรุปว่า นักบูรพาคดีอังกฤษได้เข้ามาในแหลมมลายูพร้อมๆ กับการเป็นเจ้าอาณานิคม นักบูรพาคดีอังกฤษยุคแรกจริงเป็นทั้งเจ้าหน้าที่และนักวิชาการ การศึกษาของนักบูรพาคดีมีหลายสาขาวิชา สาขาอิสลามมี การศึกษาน้อยมาก ต่างจากการศึกษาด้านสังคมและประวัติศาสตร์ที่มีการความสำคัญอย่างมากเพราะสามารถนำมาใช้เป็นแนวยุทธศาสตร์และนโยบายปกครอง แม้ว่านักบูรพาคดีถูกมองว่าเป็นเครื่องมือของรัฐอาณานิคม แต่ความรู้และข้อมูลที่ได้สร้างสรรค์มาอย่างมากมายในยุคอาณานิคม เป็นประโยชน์อย่างมากต่อวงการศึกษาในยุคต่อมา ทัศนคติของนักบูรพาคดีในต่อมาเปลี่ยนไปจากยุคแรกโดยเฉพาะที่เกี่ยวข้องกับอิสลาม อย่างไรก็ดีแม้ว่า การศึกษาค้นคว้าของนักบูรพาคดีมีแนวโน้มที่ดีขึ้น แต่ก็ยังพบความบกพร่อง ด้วยเหตุผลเชิงวิธีการศึกษา (Method) ตามแบบฉบับของชาวตะวันตก ซึ่งบางกรณีไม่สอดคล้องกับความเป็นตะวันออก

A b s t r a c t

     The Study entitled “Orientalism in the Malay World: A Study on The Historical Development of the British Orientalism in Malay Peninsula, 1786-1957”. The study aims at   1) finding the historical development of orientalism in the Malay Peninsula during the period of the British colonization and 2) studying the framework of orientalism and its academic impact to the Malay Peninsula. The documentary research is used in this study. The study found that the English orientalists had come to the Malay peninsula along with the British colonial, so as they had roles both as the officials and academicians. There were various fields of studies but they gave much attention in studying social and historical sciences since they could support the settlement of colonial policy and strategy. Although the data and research done by the oreintalists seemed to be used to support the British colonial, those data and research could benefit a lot to the later academic generation. It gradually found the positive point of view on their studies. However, it still found some misunderstandings and errors, coursed from the method used by the oreintalism, which is based on the Western point of view that in some cases not consistent to the Eastern phenomenon.
