Knowledge Transfer of Local Wisdom on Wickerwork Handicrafts in the Northeastern Region of Thailand

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to collect and study the methods of knowledge transfer of local wisdom on wickerwork handicrafts in the northeastern region of Thailand. This research was done using a qualitative research method. The data were collected from document analysis, in-depth interview and observation. The study samples came from 10 provinces: 1) Kalasin, 2) Nakhon Ratchasima, 3) Bueng Kan, 4) Buriram, 5) Maha Sarakham, 6) Mukdahan, 7) Yasothon, 8) Roi Et, 9) Sisaket, and 10) Surin. Through snowball sampling, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 key informants consisting of local experts and villagers with extensive knowledge on wickerwork handicrafts. The research instruments were document analysis form, semi-structured interview form, and observation form. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis. The results of this research indicated that knowledge on wickerwork handicrafts comprised 8 aspects: 1) the type of wickerwork handicrafts – the products related to their way of life, traditions and rituals, 2) the design of wickerwork handicrafts – applying to meet the needs of users, 3) the pattern of wickerwork handicrafts - a beautiful pattern design and suitable for use, 4) materials used in wickerwork - knowledge about local materials and natural materials selection, 5) tool making and using in wickerwork - knowledge and skills in designing and devising suitable tools, 6) tool maintenance - knowledge about the maintenance of equipment and tools used, 7) wickerwork making method - knowledge about the whole process of weaving , and 8) wickerwork conservation and development - the conservation and development processes were done by conserving the old format, developing new design due to user's need, The methods of knowledge transfer consisted of 3 aspects: 1) identifying the type of wisdom for transferring; 2) the methods of transfer, which could be classified into 8 methods: 2.1) question and answer 2.2) storytelling 2.3) coaching or training 2.4) observation 2.5) practicing 2.6) demonstration 2.7) creating a school curriculum and 2.8) transfer by using media technology; 3) knowledge capture - mostly not store knowledge in any format. The method of knowledge transfer commonly used was telling within family.
