Islamic Educational Concepts towards Building Muslim Multicultural Society: Lessons learned from Multiculturalism in Australia

Abstract
Cultural competency is the one of crucial skills for learners in the 21st century. This paper is intended to present lessons learned through an academic exchange program for promoting democratic civic education and multicultural communities in Australia. It is also intended to show how to apply the Australian way of multiculturalism to the context of the deep south of Thailand. The qualitative data were collected and analyzed as a method of this research. The results show that the concept of multiculturalism has been widely implemented and integrated into Australian society by democratic civic education as the main mechanism. In order to enhance cultural competency among youth in the deep south of Thailand by applying the Australian concept of multiculturalism, the KOALA Model was employed as an alternative conceptual means.
