Nang Tang On: Woman’s Images in Lao Literature

Abstract

This article aims to study the image of Laotian women by analyzing a scene in the book “Nang Tang-on,” which has been translated into Lao version recently due to the support of Department of Literature, Lao People’s Democratic Republic.  Three main features are discussed. 1) Character and appearance: Nang Tang-on is not only a beautiful woman, she also has a kind personality and she acts humbly. 2) Condition and role: She is a devoted wife and mother, fulfilling her duties with care and commitment. 3) Thought, mind and expression: At the same time she remains  independent, caring about her environment and is never afraid to speak out and make herself heard if necessary.
