บทความนี้วิเคราะห์ว่าคำอธิบายของที. เอ็ม. สแคนลอน (T. M. Scanlon) เรื่องความเป็นปทัสถานที่มีพื้นฐานอยู่ที่มโนทัศน์เรื่อง เหตุผล และ ความสัมพันธ์แบบเหตุผล เป็นคำอธิบายที่มีเหตุผลสนับสนุนที่หนักแน่นสืบเนื่องจากคุณสมบัติ ความสอดคล้องภายในเชิงสารัตถะ ที่ได้มาโดยวิธีดุลยภาพเชิงพินิจพิเคราะห์ โดยชี้ให้เห็นการใช้วิธีนี้ด้วยกลยุทธ์สามด้านคือ (1) การให้คำบรรยายลักษณะ (2) การแสวงหาดุลยภาพเชิงพินิจพิเคราะห์แบบแคบ และ (3) การแสวงหาดุลยภาพเชิงพินิจพิเคราะห์แบบกว้างในการโต้แย้งที่สแคนลอนทำต่อคำอธิบายเรื่องความเป็นปทัสถานของราซ (Joseph Raz) และแดนซี่ (Jonathan Dancy) คำอธิบายนี้นอกจากมีความสอดคล้องภายในเชิงสารัตถะที่ทำให้ปลอดภัยจากข้อโต้แย้งของคล้าก-โดน (Justin Clarke-Doane) เรื่องความน่าเชื่อถือ ยังมีคำตอบที่น่าพอใจให้แก่ข้อโต้แย้งเรื่องอื่นด้วย เนื่องจากสแคนลอนใช้วิธีนี้ร่วมกับวิธีทางปรัชญาอีกสองแบบ คือ (1) การสร้างมโนทัศน์เพื่อใช้นิยาม และสร้างสามัญกรณ์เพื่อใช้อธิบายโดยให้ความสำคัญกับตัวอย่างการใช้และปรากฏการณ์ และ (2) การแสวงหาการมาบรรจบกันของคำอธิบายที่แตกต่างกัน
