Abstract

Illusion of individualism in Norwegian Wood

The notion of individualism, which expresses human equality and free will, has developed in line with the modernization of society and the flourishing of the capitalist economy. Individuals are led to believe that they can fulfill their desires and attain their goals independently without the dominion and interference of certain influences and institutions which can deprive them of their freedom of choice. However, the promising idea of individualism, which leads individuals to believe that they have freedom and independence, is severely compromised by capitalism and social control. The objectives of this essay are to analyze the images of modern Japanese society portrayed in the novel Norwegian Wood written by Haruki Murakami and to investigate how the characters in the novel surrender to capitalist forces and social control, which then effectively expose the illusion of individualism to the reader.
