Abstract

This research paper aims to show that in the male-dominated Italian society, women have often been judged negatively and underestimated, particularly in the Medieval Era: an era in which the belief that all women were born with sin was widespread, and therefore in which women represented wickedness and evil. The birth of a daughter caused ruin to the family. However, when women turned into mothers, they would not be judged with such harsh prejudice. This study examines the attitude towards Italian women as shown through proverbs portraying the majority of the gentil sesso as weak, incapable and wicked, while mothers are the only figures who are praised, respected and positively regarded.
