Abstract

The works that the master painter Francisco de Goya created during his lifetime, as well as his biography, make us aware of the sociocultural and political contexts of his era, especially through the story depicted in each piece of work. Goya portrayed various aspects of the ways of life of common people and elites, such as their daily lives, the customs and traditions they practiced, the political issues in the royal court that affected them, and the administration of the country. The cruelty of war, which made all parties simultaneously attackers and victims, inspired Goya to convey its impact in his drawings and prints as a warning for succeeding generations. He also illustrated other problems encountered in Spain in the Age of Enlightenment, revealing the magnitude of Spain’s underdeveloped condition compared to other countries in the region.
