Abstract

The Ambiguous World of Crime Fiction: Deconstructing Binary Oppositions in Sherlock Holmes Stories

It is widely believed that the genre of crime fiction does not merit serious academic study because it firmly belongs to popular, and therefore "low," culture. Implicit within this conviction is the notion that crime fiction lacks the complexity of "high" literature and that it is mired in simplistic binary oppositions. This article is an attempt to contest this popular view of crime fiction and to demonstrate that this literary genre is, in fact, replete with details that challenge the binary oppositions with which it is often associated. In order to do so, the article examines the theme of colonialism in the short story "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" and the novella The Hound of the Baskervilles by the renowned crime fiction writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
