Haunting Love: Queer Love and Globalization in Contemporary Thai Novels

Abstract

Globalized societies nowadays leave more public spaces for sexual minorities to be able to conduct their own ways of life. ‘Queer’ is an umbrella term for those minorities that deviate from heteronormative ideologies whose ideas divide sexual behavior and identity into those that are normal and natural and those that are abnormal and unnatural. Like the construction of gender, heterosexual love is naturalized by excluding and stigmatizing queer love as an unnatural and ‘haunting love.’ Applied to ghosts that haunt normal livings, queer love shares similar aspects as being ‘the other’ that haunts heterosexual love. This article aims to analyze how globalized heteronormative Thailand constructs the meaning of queer love in three contemporary Thai novels and how the heterosexuals are haunted by the love they exclude from their borders of heteronormativity. The analysis in this article will show that love is not only understood as a natural feeling and a basic human instinct but is also socially constructed by dominant discourses. This analysis will also show that the queer love challenges the heterosexual binary and the heteronormative discourses by redefining intimate relationships between the sexual minorities. However, defining the haunting of queer is a subtle way of strengthening the heterosexual love bond.

รักหลอกหลอน: ความรักของเควียร์กับยุคโลกาภิวัตน์ในนวนิยายไทยร่วมสมัย

สังคมโลกาภิวัตน์ปัจจุบันเพิ่มพื้นที่ให้ชนกลุ่มน้อยทางเพศสามารถดำเนินวิถีชีวิตของตนเองได้มากขึ้น ‘เควียร์’ เป็นคำที่มีความหมายกว้างสำหรับใช้เรียกคนกลุ่มดังกล่าวที่ไม่สอดรับกับอุดมการณ์รักต่างเพศซึ่งแบ่งแยกพฤติกรรมและอัตลักษณ์ทางเพศออกเป็น ‘ความปกติ’ และ ‘ธรรมชาติ’ กับ ‘ความผิดปกติ’ และ ‘ผิดธรรมชาติ’ เช่นเดียวกับโครงสร้างเรื่องเพศ ความรักของชายหญิงถูกทำให้เป็นเรื่อง ‘ธรรมชาติ’ ด้วยการผลักไสและตีตราความรักของเควียร์ว่า ‘ผิดธรรมชาติ’ และเป็น ‘รักหลอกหลอน’ เมื่อพิจารณาถึงแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับผีที่คอยหลอกหลอนคนเป็นจะพบว่าความรักของเควียร์มีลักษณะร่วมกับผี คือ ถูกมองในแง่ของ ‘ความเป็นอื่น’ ที่คอยหลอกหลอนความรักระหว่างชายหญิง บทความนี้มุ่งวิเคราะห์ให้เห็นว่าสังคมไทยยุคโลกาภิวัตน์ประกอบสร้างความหมายอย่างไรให้กับความรักของเควียร์ในนวนิยายไทยร่วมสมัยสามเรื่อง โดยแสดงให้เห็นว่าชายจริงหญิงแท้ถูกหลอกหลอนด้วยความรักที่พวกเขาพยายามผลักไสให้ออกไปจากเขตแดนของความรักต่างเพศ(ของตนเอง) อีกทั้งยังแสดงให้เห็นว่าความรักมิได้เป็นเพียงความรู้สึกที่เกิดขึ้นเองตามสัญชาตญาณโดยธรรมชาติของมนุษย์ หากแต่มีวาทกรรมต่างๆ ในสังคมมาคอยกำกับอยู่ นอกจากนี้ บทวิเคราะห์ยังแสดงให้เห็นว่าความรักของเควียร์ท้าทายขั้วต่างของอุดมการณ์รักต่างเพศด้วยการรื้อสร้างนิยามความหมายของความสัมพันธ์ในกลุ่มเควียร์ อย่างไรก็ตาม การนิยามความรักของเควียร์ให้เป็น ‘รักหลอกหลอน’ นั้น ถือเป็นแผนการอันแยบยลของสังคมรักต่างเพศในการสถาปนาเชิดชูความรักระหว่างชายจริงหญิงแท้
