บ้านผีสิง: การหลอกหลอนกับความรุนแรงทางเพศใน เพรงสนธยา

Abstract

เพรงสนธยา เป็นนวนิยายของพงศกรที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการหลอกหลอนของวิญญาณ ภายในบ้านวรรณกรรมที่มีแก่นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับผีมักมุ่งเน้นในการสร้างความสนุกสนานตื่นเต้นให้แก่ผู้อ่านเป็นหลัก อย่างไรก็ตาม นวนิยายเล่มนี้ไม่เพียงให้ความสนุกสนานเพลิดเพลินกับผู้อ่านเท่านั้น แต่ยังชักชวนให้ผู้อ่านหันมาให้ความสำคัญกับผีและการหลอกหลอนอย่างจริงจัง เพรงสนธยา นำเสนอเรื่องราวของบ้านที่มีวิญญาณสิงอยู่และผู้ที่ต้องเผชิญกับการหลอนโดยตรง คือ ตัวละครสตรี นอกจากความเป็นหญิงจะเกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์กับความเป็นผีแล้ว ผีและการหลอนยังเป็นเครื่องมือที่ผู้เขียนใช้วิพากษ์อุดมการณ์ของชนชั้นกลางในสังคมไทย โดยเฉพาะค่านิยมเรื่องเพศ ความเป็นส่วนตัว และการถือครองทรัพย์สินส่วนบุคคล นอกจากนี้การปรากฏตัวของผีภายในบ้านยังเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นให้ตัวละครหันมาสืบค้นประวัติความเป็นมา ของบ้าน รวมทั้งเรื่องราวของผู้ที่เคยอาศัยอยู่ในสถานที่แห่งนี้ การสืบค้นเผยให้เห็นเรื่องราวความรุนแรงที่เกิดขึ้นต่อสตรีเพศซึ่งถูกปกปิดไว้เป็นความลับภายในครัวเรือน ผีจึงเป็นตัวแทน ในการเรียกร้องความยุติธรรมให้กับผู้ที่ตกเป็นเหยื่อของความรุนแรง แม้เรื่องราวจะจบลงอย่าง มีความสุขด้วยการที่ผู้เขียนให้วิญญาณที่สิงอยู่ในบ้านได้รับการปลดปล่อยเป็นอิสระหลังจากความลับถูกเปิดเผย แต่การที่ผู้เขียนให้ตัวละครพยายามลบเลือนผีออกจากความทรงจำ และแทนที่เรื่องราวการหลอกหลอนด้วยความรักแบบโรแมนติกของตัวละคร ส่งผลให้วรรณกรรมเรื่องนี้ยังติดอยู่ในมายาคติของชนชั้นกลางที่นำเสนอภาพของบ้านว่าเป็นสถานที่อบอุ่นปลอดภัย แม้บ้านจะเคยเป็นสถานที่ที่น่าสะพรึงกลัว แต่ในทัศนะของตัวละคร ความรุนแรงที่เคยเกิดขึ้น ณ สถานที่แห่งนี้เป็นเรื่องของอดีตที่ได้ผ่านพ้นไปแล้วและไม่ควรค่าแก่การจดจำอีกต่อไป

Haunted House:  Haunting and Domestic Violence in Before Nightfall

The novel Before Nightfall written by Pongsakorn is a ghost story about a haunted house. Stories with ghosts as a major theme have long been a form of entertainment for readers seeking excitement and horror from these supernatural beings. However; Before Nightfall is more than a mere entertainment; it invites the readers to take ghosts and haunting seriously. Haunting in the novel is directly experienced by the female characters who; by playing the role of haunted subjects; reveal a close relationship between ghostliness and femininity. The novel also employs ghosts to criticize middle-class values especially; sexual repression; privacy and ownership of property. Moreover; ghosts function in the novel as agents of justice. The appearance of ghosts in the house marks the beginning of the characters’ search for the past. The search reveals the secret of the house as the site of domestic violence where women have fallen victim. Once the truth is uncovered and all the spirits involved are freed; peace and order are restored to the house. However; the erasure of the ghosts from the characters’ memories and the substitution of a love story for haunting make the ending of the novel problematic. In other words; the narrative makes it appear that domestic violence; in the same way as the ghosts once haunting the house; is an issue of the bygone past; irrelevant to the characters in the present; thereby reinforcing the middle class notion of home as a site of happiness and security.
