Political Myths and Musical Enigmas: a Distinctive View of Ireland during ‘The Troubles’ in Wintering Out

Abstract

While it is not unusual for poetry to deal with politics, Seamus Heaney’s collection of poems, Wintering Out, has certain qualities that make it stand out. This paper aims to explain how the poet’s political position and sense of national identity are subtly implied in his poetry, creating a distinctive view of Ireland at a time of great political conflict in Northern Ireland. Wintering Out was published during the time of “The Troubles”, the conflict between the Catholic nationalists and the Protestant Unionist of Northern Ireland where the former wanted to separate Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom and the latter wanted to stay a British dependency, and, also, the conflict between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, the colonizer of Northern Ireland, who wanted to defend law and order in the land it occupied. Heaney classifies himself as Irish not British and uses his poetry to clarify his position in the political conflict while, at the same time, making an effort to reconcile his Irish compatriots who are divided into two camps. However, instead of using radical words, violent images of conflict or heartbreaking facts and scenarios like some other poets, Heaney adopts language and music, the two elements that represent the Irish identity, to establish a new perspective in his own distinctive voice. This paper seeks to identify the techniques he employs to illustrate his Irish identity in a selection of poems from Wintering Out by examining closely the use of language and the portrayal of music including Irish traditional music and musical instruments, that are featured in the poems, against a background of works of criticism and the historical setting of Ireland and The Troubles.  The aim is to analyze these elements and try to clarify the message that they convey about the Irish national identity. The result of the study demonstrates Heaney’s distinctive way of portraying the Irish identity and his view of Ireland during the time of “The Troubles”. The paper unites the study of literature, language and history and, in dealing with the issue of “The Troubles”, provides yet another interesting example of how history can be presented and interpreted through literature.
