ความหมายของคำว่า แต่ ในภาษาไทยสมัยเก่า (พุทธศตวรรษที่ 19-22)

บทคัดย่อ

งานวิจัยนี้มีสมมติฐานเบื้องต้นว่า คำว่า แต่ ในภาษาไทยเป็นคำหลายความหมาย และความหมายต่าง ๆ ของคำว่า แต่ มีความสัมพันธ์ในเชิงประวัติ งานวิจัยนี้จึงต้องการที่จะศึกษาคำว่า แต่ ในเชิงประวัติ เพื่อให้ทราบว่าในสมัยก่อน คำว่า แต่ มีความหมายอื่น ๆ นอกเหนือจากที่ปรากฏใช้ในปัจจุบันหรือไม่ ความหมายใดบ้าง งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์ว่า ในภาษาไทยสมัยเก่า (พุทธศตวรรษที่ 19-22) คำว่า แต่ มีความหมายอะไรบ้าง โดยใช้เกณฑ์จำแนกความหมายตามทฤษฎีคำหลายความหมายอย่างมีหลักการ (Principled Polysemy) ของไทเลอร์และเอแวนส์ (Tyler and Evans 2001; Tyler and Evans 2003; Evans 2004; Evans 2005) ซึ่งจะต้องอาศัยการพิจารณาคำที่ปรากฏร่วมและหน่วยสร้างทางไวยากรณ์ของคำที่ต้องการศึกษา ผลการวิเคราะห์ปรากฏว่า คำว่า แต่ ในภาษาไทยสมัยเก่ามีความหมายทั้งหมด 12 ความหมาย ดังต่อไปนี้ (1) ‘บ่งชี้แหล่งที่มาของการเคลื่อนที่’ (2) ‘บ่งชี้แหล่งที่มาของการครอบครอง’ (3) ‘บ่งชี้แหล่งที่มาของการบรรลุผล’ (4) ‘บ่งชี้เวลาเริ่มต้น’ (5) ‘บ่งชี้เวลาในอดีต’ (6) ‘บ่งชี้เจ้าของ’ (7) ‘บ่งชี้ความเฉพาะ’ (8) ‘บ่งชี้แก่นความ’ (9) ‘บ่งชี้ผู้รับสาร’ (10) ‘บ่งชี้ผู้รับผลประโยชน์’ (11) ‘บ่งชี้จุดหมายนามธรรม’ และ (12) ‘เชื่อมความที่คล้อยตามกัน’
