Travel Modal Choice of Land passenger Transportation Choosing from Nong Khai Province, Thailand to Luang Prabang Province, Lao People's Democratic Republic

Abstract

          This research aimed to examine: 1) the factors affecting the choice of land transportation modes of passengers traveling from Nong Khai Province, Thailand to Luang Prabang Province (Lao PDR), and 2) the factors affecting the choice of using the high-speed rail service between Nong Khai and Luang Prabang. Data were collected from 400 Thai passengers intending to travel from Nong Khai, Thailand, to Luang Prabang, Lao PDR, using three modes of transportation: buses, vans, and high-speed rail (a future travel option). Data analysis was performed using STATA software, applying descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, maximum, minimum, mean, and standard deviation, as well as using the Nested Logit Model.

           The results of the study showed that 1) Factors influencing passengers' choices of land transportation modes when traveling from Nong Khai Province, Thailand to Luang Prabang Province, Laos were: travel time and passengers’ age. And 2) Factors affecting the choice of using the high-speed train service on the Nong Khai-Luang Prabang route were gender and income.
