Guidelines for Enhancing Teachers’ Learning Management through Lesson Study at the Small Primary Schools under Uttaradit Primary Educational Service Area Office 1

Abstract

          This research aimed to 1) examine the current and desirable conditions of teacher development in learning management and 2) investigate guidelines for developing teachers’ learning management through the Lesson Study process at the small schools. A mixed-methods research design was employed. The population consisted of 188 participants, including 94 school directors and 94 academic affairs teachers, together with nine experts. The research instruments were a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview form. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, the Priority Needs Index, and content analysis.

           The findings revealed that 1) the overall current condition was at a high level, whereas the overall desirable condition was at the highest level; and 2) the guidelines for developing teachers’ learning management through the Lesson Study process comprised five areas. First, in setting learning goals, the schools should collaboratively analyze student achievement data to establish appropriate learning goals. Second, in learning development planning, teachers should analyze the students’ learning problems to design lesson plans and clearly determine classroom observation focuses before implementation. Third, in learning management and classroom observation, active learning lesson plans should be implemented in actual classrooms, while the students’ learning behaviors should be systematically observed and used as evidence for reflection. Fourth, in classroom reflection, constructive professional reflection sessions should be organized using empirical evidence of students’ learning behaviors as a basis for improving learning management. Finally, in lesson revision, findings from the reflection process should be used to revise lessons in accordance with students’ needs, and the revised lessons should be retaught to examine their effectiveness.
