Development Guidelines for Students’ Desirable Characteristics at Schools under the Sukhothai Thani Town Municipality

The objectives of this study were: 1. to assess the needs and requirements for developing desirable characteristics, and 2. to find ways to develop desirable characteristics of students at educational institutions under the Sukhothai Thani Town Municipality. This study was a mixed methods research approach. The population used in the research was 6 school administrators, and 157 teachers, totally 163 people. The instruments used in the study were questionnaires and interviews. Statistical tools used in data analysis included percentage, mean, standard deviation, index of essential needs, and content analysis.
The results of the research showed that 1) necessary needs for the development of desirable characteristics of students, arranged from the highest to lowest, were: perseverance, eagerness to learn; discipline; perfect human body, mind, and intellect; commitment to work; ability for living happily with others as a Thai citizen; honesty; love for the nation, religion, and king; public spirit; morality and ethics. 2) Guidelines for developing desirable characteristics of the students included 9 aspects: perseverance, eagerness to learn, and searching for knowledge on your own; discipline students’ participation in making rules and mutual evaluation; complete human beings body, mind, and intellect; exploring opportunities for real practice; commitment to working knowing how to set goals continuously; ability to live happily with others as a Thai citizen; consideration of the public interest rather than theirs; honesty bringing an integrated anti-corruption curriculum in the subject areas of patriotism, religion, and kingship; organizing activities for the teachings of various religions; public spirit organizing activities beneficial for the school, community, society; and morality and ethics organizing activities for promoting desirable ethics and morality.
