Nevertheless, the focus of such studies has been on interpersonal apologies, never on the apologies made by public figures through the media. This article aims to conduct a pragmatics study of the apology techniques of Thai politicians on public media. The data used in the research includes 33 speech act sets of politicians’ apologies on public media from 2011 to 2015. The research reveals that the politicians’ apologies are broadcasted to the public via five channels which are 1) press conferences, 2) government’s radio/television programs, 3) public gatherings, 4) Facebook posts, and 5) press Q&A. The politicians’ apology techniques consist of six main techniques: 1) using words that demonstrate the power of apology speech acts, 2) accepting the faulty situation, 3) making excuses, 4) offering compensations, 5) promising an improvement, and 6) showing commitment to perform efficiently. Said techniques differ from interpersonal apologies found in previous studies. The politicians’ apologizing techniques suggest that apology is not tantamount to admitting faults, but rather admitting faulty situations, and making excuses is an indispensable technique. Since politicians wish to maintain credibility and political space, it is imperative for them to spread the blame or steer the blame away from themselves as much as possible, meanwhile maintaining a positive image to compensate for or refute the mistakes.

ER -
