In this paper, Chinese documentation was analysed to investigate the origin of “ลายสือ” (Lai-Sue) and its definition under the framework of Etymology. The result shows that the coinage of “ลายสือ” (Lai-Sue) was influenced by the southern Chinese dialects during the Sui – Song Dynasties, and the northern Thai dialects in the Era of Sukhothai. The analytic findings identify that “ลายสือ” (Lai-Sue) was combined from two lexical units. One was “ลาย” (Lai) which was translated from “文”. The other unit was “สือ” (Sue) which was transliterated from “書”. Indeed, these two Chinese lexical units had the same meaning as “a letter”. The meaning of these two original words was duplicate. That is to say, “ลายสือ” (Lai-Sue) was coined by the process of reduplication.</p>}, number={2}, journal={Journal of Letters}, author={แก้วสุวรรณ์ จตุวิทย์}, year={2018}, month={Jan.}, pages={217–246} }
