Family-Related Factors Influencing to Juvenile Delinquency in Krabi Province

Abstract

          This research article aimed to: (1) examine family-related factors influencing delinquent behavior among children and youth in Krabi Province, and (2) propose guidelines for preventing and addressing juvenile delinquency in the province. This study employed a qualitative research design using semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data were collected from 17 key informants representing five groups: (1) juvenile offenders, (2) officers from the Juvenile Observation and Protection Center, (3) police officers, (4) juvenile and family prosecutors, and (5) probation officers. The data were analyzed using content analysis.

           The findings revealed that: (1) the family-related factors influencing to juvenile delinquency consisted of four major dimensions: (a) family processes, particularly parenting practices and behavioral supervision, which were identified as the most influential factors; (b) family structure, especially parental separation and the absence of close parental supervision; (c) family occupation and socioeconomic status, which affected children's quality of life and social opportunities; and (d) residential environment and social context that facilitated risk-taking behaviors. (2) The proposed guidelines for addressing juvenile delinquency emphasize an integrated approach involving families, schools, communities, the justice system, and the application of technology for monitoring and prevention. Priority should be given to strengthening family relationships, promoting positive family communication, and developing appropriate social support systems to prevent reoffending and enhance the long-term well-being of children and youth.
