This study used Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Twelve participants were third-year nursing students who had initial practice on psychiatric clinic at Khonkaen Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital. Data were purposively collected using individual in-depth interviews based on the researcher-generated interview guidelines and were analyzed using Leonard’s method. The data trustworthiness was established following Lincoln and Guba’s criteria. The findings of this study revealed six thematic categories reflected including 1) fear, this was an emotional reaction when nursing students had no experience in caring for psychiatric patient. Then, a patient was negatively imaged by drama, news, other’s speech, and previous experience 2) anxiety, this was an emotional in-confidence when they were unable to cope a new situation. 3) self -adjustment, nursing students attempted to adapt or manage a situation in nursing practice to reach the goal. 4) feel comfortable with lecturer or preceptor was by their side, teaching, giving advice and demonstrating practice while performing nursing activities 5) self-awareness, and 6) understanding of the patient and others, this reflected in nursing practice which demonstrated a better understanding and positive attitude to patients and others. This study could enable nurse’s instructor and advisor to better understand the causes of behavioral expressions of nursing students during practice and use as a guide for improving the quality of teaching in nursing practice to solve problems and needs for initial practice on psychiatric clinic.</p> ER -
